Days 127-130: Lima

Lima 5.jpg

By the time we arrived in Lima (by overnight bus) we were very much in need of some R&R. We hadn’t had even a day of doing nothing – no walking around a city or sightseeing – since Sucre! Over a month of full-on activities.

Since Lima has a reliable bus and train links in to the centre, we booked in to a B&B in the trendy Miraflores, which is on the coastal side of Lima. Although it was exciting to see a beach again for the first time since Brazil in May, we visited Lima at a time where it is constantly covered in ‘Scotch Mist’.

So the only thing really to do in that case is sleep and eat a lot of delicious Peruvian food that Lima is known over the world for.

Miraflores is a great area for food. It is a little pricier than the rest of Peru and it does seem like all the richer kids live in this area so that would explain the price hike, however compared to the UK it is still VERY reasonable. I’m writing this over a year since we went so apologies for not including prices!

Great Restaurants:

El Mercado was definitely a highlight of our culinary experience of Lima. Firstly it looks very cool – It is very light and fresh, has a bar serving great cocktails and you can see the kitchen from your seat. We did have to book and it has a great atmosphere because it is so busy. We went at lunch (FYI it is closed on a Monday) and everything we ate was delicious. This is a must if you love seafood and fish like we do.

We also ate at Costazul in Miraflores, which is also great for seafood. I think I ate ceviche every day and seafood every evening.

We couldn’t have visited Lima without going to the centre and doing a wee bit of culture. I’m glad we did, because the main square has lovely architecture and lots of coffee shops, and the Basilica is really cool. If you visit the Basilica, there is a guided tour with your ticket that takes you in to the catacombs. It’s very interesting but a tad creepy, as you see lots of human skeletons.

Another bonus of the Basilica is that just outside down a side street is a place that serves THE BEST churros we have ever eaten. We found it because there was a long queue of locals on the street and didn’t even see the sign (the best way of finding a food gem). This woman is sold out within hours and is only open in the morning and a few days a week!
